GRAMMAR GUIDE: CAPITAL LETTERS

The first word of every sentence begins with a capital letter. Other important words in English begin with a capital letter.

EXAMPLES

1. the first word of a sentence

What is his name? His name is Matthew Simmons.

2. the pronoun I

Harris and I like to play tennis together.

3. the names and titles of people

He has a meeting with Dr. Carol Wolf.

Let’s call Song Vee.

4. the names of streets, cities, states,

The library is on Juniper Street.

countries, and continents

She is from Austin, Texas.

They live in Lima, Peru.

Peru is in South America.

5. days of the week and months of the year

His birthday is next Thursday.

We’re going on vacation in June.

6. the names of languages and nationalities

He speaks Vietnamese.

My grandparents are Mexican.
